Saddle sores - skin injuries in the crotch that develop from chafing caused by pedaling action. Sores can range from tender raw spots to boil-like lesions if infection occurs.

Saddle time - time spent cycling.

Sag wagon - a motor vehicle that follows a group of riders, carrying equipment and lending assistance in the event of difficulty. Also called the broom wagon.

Sandbagger - a racer who stays in an easier category instead of moving up. USA Cycling rules mandate an upgrade after a certain number of top finishes.

Schmooz - the act of reaching a trail head and not riding. What is done when one really can't stand the thought of starting a ride. Talking. Bullshitting.

Schwag - free stuff. "Hey, they're handing out scwag over at the Rock Shox booth."

Scream 1) a real biker's dream ride. 2)a long, straight, and deceptively steep hill. 3)to bomb so fast one can't pedal fast enough to make a difference.

Set - in interval or weight training, a specific number of repetitions.

Shaka, Brah -As you say it, stretch out your thumb and pinky; waggle your hand back and forth. Now you're an idiot.

Sharkbite - the mark that your large chainring makes in your calf or other exposed body part when you fall.

Singletrack - We said it already, but there's nothing like riding the curved and narrow. There are great singletracks everywhere. Not enough of them are open to bikes. Know a good closed singletrack?

Sit on a wheel - to ride in someone's draft.

Skid Lid - helmet.

Skid Row - that section of trail that nobody ever expects or remembers that always appears too suddenly when riding too fast. Usually switchbacks. Named after all the skid tracks left there from previous riders.

Sky - to jump extremely high. To get big air.

Slingshot - to sprint past another rider after catching up in the draft.

Slipstream - the pocket of calmer air behind a moving rider. Also called the draft.

Snakebite -Maybe the first real piece of off-road slang folks learn, for the two-holed flat you get when you slam hard on underinflated tires. Though inner tube goops and reinforcing strips help prevent punctures, there's no truly effective protection against snakebite flats, other than more finesse when you're riding. Snap - the ability to accelerate quickly.

Sneakers - tires

Soft-pedal - to rotate the crank without actually applying power.

Specificity - the law of athletic training that says you get good at those things you practice.

Speed work - fast training using intervals, sprints, time trials and motorpacing.

Spider Patrol - lead rider, or first rider to run into a mongo banana spider. Similar to cob clearer.

Spike - to obtain a chainring tattoo on the back of the calf, usually the result of a newbie trying to dab or panic skid at high speeds.

Spin - to pedal at high cadence.

Spinner - a rider who pedals in a moderate gear at a relatively fast cadence, relying on pedal rpm for speed.

Sport - the basic mountain bike racing category.

Spring Planting - a face plant.

Spudded - crashing as a result of not being able to unclip from spuds in time to avert disaster.

Spuds - "SPD" (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics) clipless pedals.

Squirrel - a nervous or unstable rider who can't be trusted to maintain a steady line.

Stage race - a multi-day event consisting of point-to-point and circuit road races, time trials and, sometimes, criteriums. The winner is the rider with the lowest elapsed time for all stages.

Steed - your bike, the reason for your existence.

STI - "Shimano Total Integration" -- a marketing ploy that forces you to buy new brakes when you replace your shifters.

Sting Ray -Schwinn's legendary bike of the 1970s. The perfect kid's rig, it could hardly do anything, but we made them do everything. The sparkly seats and bright colors, recently revived by Schwinn, completed the package. Now, when is the company going to resuscitate those flowery girl seats and pink frames. That's what I want.

Stoked - euphoric feeling of enlightenment, caused by adrenaline rushing to the brain during a gonzo clean. 

Stoned - describes a rider after a crash which imbeds stones into the rider's skin.

Straight block - a cassette with cogs that increase in size in one-tooth increments.

Superman - a rider who flies over the handlebars and doesn't hit the ground for a long time. This may result in injury, but when it doesn't, it's really funny for everyone else

Suppleness - a quality of highly conditioned leg muscles that allows a rider to pedal at high cadence with smoothness and power. Also known by the French term, souplesse.

Swag - prizes. Also, products given out at races or festivals by manufacturers.

Switchback - a 90-degree or greater turn.
